North Korea: Finding hope in a hopeless nation The following letter shares the story of a North Korean believer whose life on earth was ended because of his Christian faith and witness. Dear Family of "Shin Jae Min": You don't know me. I was a friend of your brother. I know you never got a chance to know him since he grew up inside North Korea. But I knew him well. We shared a prison cell, arrested for the crime of being Christians and spreading the Gospel. In North Korea there is no greater crime. I've wanted to contact you since my release, but there is no easy way to tell you about your brother's suffering and his death. The truth is, four months after his arrest in North Korea, he died of starvation, disease and abuse in Room 5 of the prison -- the cell reserved for those convicted of the worst and most heinous crimes.
